| Park by the church, up
the lane to the west. Warners bells (1889) on plain bearings, in a wooden
frame, so the bells ring slightly heavier than 7cwt but go reasonably. They
even sound O.K. despite the Warners reputation, but are quite loud inside due
to "sound control" for the nearby houses. The pub (White Horse, 01983 730375)
is down the hill from the church. It now has a small children's room and a
large beer garden and does good food. |
The church was formed from two
separate manorial chapels, each with a different dedication; the dividing wall
between them was removed in the 16th century and at the same time the tower was
added.
The bells and clock were the bequest of W. Spindler, a German
living at Old Park, St. Lawrence. All the bells are inscribed "CAST BY JOHN
WARNER AND SONS LONDON 1889". The bells from this founder were not noted for an
excellent tonal qualities, but Whitwell were lucky. The bell on the floor at
the rear of the church is by "PW", thought to be Peter de Weston.
They
are hung in a wooden frame with the treble and 5th on the top tier under the
tower roof, and the four other bells on the lower tier just above the
clock. |
