Large car park just north
of church (towards Ryde). Train station 10 minutes from church: go straight out
of station and along to main road, then follow it around to the right. The Wax
Works, a pub (the Bugle, indoor & outdoor children's area, good food) and
tea shops with large rear gardens are just down the hill from the
church. Not the best bells on th Island, but otherwise they go well, but are
a bit loud. Take care on the wooden ladder as you come back down since the
ladder is very steep. |
The present church at Brading dates
back to the 12th century although links go back to 686. The village used to be
a port, and the quay can still be seen. The tower is unusual in that it is
built on four piers at the entrance to the church; the ringing room formed a
balcony at the western end of the nave (now separate by a perspex screen) and
is reached by climbing the wooden ladder under the tower.
The bells are
on two levels in a wooden frame; the second, third and fifth are on the top
tier and the remaining five bells are below. The oldest bell is the tenor,
dated 1594; 6th by Clement Tosier (1709), 7th by "RB" (1622) Up until 1887
there were four bells, when Mears and Stainbank recast the old treble, added
four bells and rehung the remainder. |
