won and the 8 bells went to Taylors, for retuning, recasting the tenor and
treble, and augmenting to a 16½cwt twelve. They were rehung by Island
ringers in a metal frame lower in the tower. Other bells are by Mears (6,7,9 in
1808) by William Eldridge (8,11 in 1675) and John Warner (10 in 1920). First
rung, 28 April 1989; best not rushed unless your band is very experienced on
twelve, or else you won't hear the trebles. Work to clappers in 2001 make them
easier to strike well and sound control means that you can ring at (almost) any
time. |
| St Thomas's Newport was completely
rebuilt in 1854-55, although much of the interior has been retained. The old
church contained a ring of six bells cast by William Eldridge of Chertsey in
1674-75, which were augmented to eight by the additionof two trebles and
recasting the 3rd and 5th of the new eight; the work was done by Thomas Mears
and Son of Whitechapel in 1808. In 1857 John Warner and Son of Cripplegate
recast the treble and hung the bells in the new church, and they also retuned
the bells and removed the canons in 1917, and later recast the 6th in 1920. In
1988 the treble was replaced and the tenor recast, and four additional bells
were added to increase the ring to twelve. |
