| Park outside the church
or in the pub car park west of the pub (The Crown). Previously notoriously hard
work, the rehanging and augmentation to six in 1998 now mean the bells are
pleasant to ring; in 1990 the I.W. District held its first meeting here since
1922, and the 1922 minutes declared them hard work. The pub (Crown Inn, 01983
740293) opposite has a rear garden with trout stream. It does good food and
beer, but can get crowded; best to go on a sunny day in summer or go early.

The church was originally a chapel
constructed around 1100, and was completely re-modelled in 1440. The stone
spire was the gift of Sir John Leigh of Northcourt, Shorwell, 1617.
The
present 3rd (by "IH", John Higden of Hampshire, 1641), 5th & 6th (by "RB"
of Hampshire,1601 & 1611) were augmented and re hung as a ring of five by
Whitechapel in 1893. A Whitechapel treble was added and the bells tuned and
rehung as a six in June 1998. |
