| Parking is in the road
next to the church. Train station not too far, through the town (see OS map
link). Thought unringable until a few years ago, and are now available unless
in high winds; no ringing is allowed if force eight or above. Ringing times
have to fit in with the hotels close by, and visits may be restricted during
the summer. All bells by M&S, 1888. Rehung February 2002, all new fittings
but in the old frame. |
St Saviours is a relatively modern
church, with the foundation stone being laid in 1867 and the tower being
completed in 1887. The bells were cast by Mears & Stainbank at the
Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1888 and hung the same year.
The bells had
been rung regularly until 1925 when doubts were expressed about the tower. In
1985 the pinnacles were removed, and following a structural report and much
hard work clearing sixty years of debris, ringing started again. The bells are
hung in a wooden frame on two tiers, odd bells on top. All of the bells are
inscribed "MEARS AND STAINBANK WHITECHAPEL BELL FOUNDRY LONDON". |
